A tool system for the novice DIYer

As a homeowner, I promised myself I would be a DIYer and not leave all the repairs up to my husband. But as a petite woman, and with limited wrist-torque abilities, it seemed that I was going to need help with some of my new homework.

The good news, however, is that the Black & Decker VPX System levels the reno playing field. The VPX System is a line of eight cordless, lithium-ion power tools that have some great features. They’re lighter-weight, but still sturdy.

The 1VPX combo kit is great for someone just starting a tool collection. It includes a power screwdriver, cut saw, LED flashlight and a VPX battery and charger. Each of these tools uses one 7-volt battery. I found that the battery held its charge well, but to get full use of the starter set, I would purchase a second battery so you’ll always have one ready to go. The batteries take five hours to charge.

The flashlight withstood several drops to a concrete floor and has a clip for attaching it to your tool belt. The cut saw, complete with one blade for cutting wood and another for cutting metal, handled well and didn’t put me off with too much vibration or noise. You can also use two hands on the saw, which is a bonus for a compact unit.

The screwdriver has two torque settings. The only problem is that the bit sometimes slips out of the hex-head chuck, leaving your Phillips or slot bit in the screw. The 1VPX starter set is a solid choice for novices, but the experienced handywoman (or man) may find the tools a little light for bigger jobs.

For heavier driving, there’s the 2VPX drill/driver, which comes with two batteries, charger stand, and set of bits. This baby has power!

For cleanup, the 2VPX hand vac is a godsend; however, the required two batteries and charger are sold separately. It’s nice and light, and has good suction with great accessory tools.
