Just eliminate water

Having a second full bathroom is very handy. When I decided to renovate my two-piece basement bathroom, I knew I wanted to add a shower. So, I hunted for a product that fit my skill set: comfortable with household DIY but new to shower installation.

I discovered Schluter, a company that makes various products for installing tile and stone. I was interested in its Kerdi shower kit. It comes with everything I needed in one box: a 48″ x 48″ shower tray that can be trimmed to fit my shower dimensions, a shower curb, a drain and all the waterproofing membrane I needed.

You can install the kit by yourself, but I found an extra set of hands to be very helpful, especially when trying to apply the large pieces of the waterproofing membrane to the walls. Also, if you’ve never used thinset mortar before, expect to make a bit of a mess.

The installation went smoothly, and I’m happy with the outcome. I now can install the tiles without worrying about the potential for water leakage.
