Build a Mission bed

This bed is no flimsy featherweight. It’s inspired by a robust furniture style created by William Morris, a designer and social reformer active around the turn of the century. If furniture had a gender, Morris’s legacy would be masculine. The stout, yet elegant styling is a combination that remains popular a century after its inception. Before filling your shop with sawdust, there is something you need to know about this project. That is the importance of quartersawn oak in Morris-style (also called Mission-style) design. This lumber has its growth rings oriented square to the face of the boards, thereby highlighting a grain feature called “ray fleck”. Ray fleck is a common feature in the Morris style.
