What wood should you use for outdoor projects?

Not all wood species are created equal, and knowing what type of wood to use and when is vital to the success of your project.

Here’s a few options to keep in mind when selecting a type of wood for an exterior application.

Western red cedar

Pros:

  • Resists decay
  • Weathers well
  • Resistant to twisting and warping
  • Dimensional stability

Cons:

  • Low strength properties, not used in structural applications

Use it for:

  • Siding
  • Decks
  • Exterior doors

Spruce

Pros

  • Easy to nail
  • Strength for light wood framing applications

Cons:

  • Can have dark knots
  • Can contain pitch pockets and does not paint well

Use it for:

  • Light wood framing
  • Rood trusses

Douglas fir

Pros:

  • Very durable
  • Ages well
  • Available in large size

Cons:

  • Can check (split) over time

White Pine

Pros:

  • Soft wood, easy to machine

Cons:

  • Lacks the strength of spruce

Use it for:

  • Mouldings
