How to cut and polish quartz

As a matter of fact, I too had quartz countertops installed in my kitchen renovation (see the October 2011 issue). Quartz countertops are polished exactly the same as other stone: with progressively finer grit abrasives. The easiest way to do it is to bring it to a countertop manufacturer and have them do it for you on their polishing equipment (the cost should be minimal).

But, if you truly want to DIY, Lee Valley sells a series of 5”-round sanding pads specifically made for polishing called Micromesh. These abrasives go from a fine grit all the way up to super-fine and will go on a 5” random orbital sander. When used according to the directions, they work very well, but it is a time-consuming (and messy!) process.
